Fashionista

So I may not be the most fashionable person on the planet. (Please, hold your objections until the end.) My daily debate: New black sweat pants or old black sweat pants?

After years of mistakes and my more polished friends kindly turning the other way as I approached, I have learned a few tips.

Basic Tip 101: If you wear something unique on one part of your body, wear something calming on the other. Ex: Balance a mini skirt with a basic top. Or balance a unique neckline with basic bottoms.

The same holds true for picking character names. It’s all about the balance.

I recently began developing an early reader series. While choosing my main character’s name I broke my own fashion rule. I mixed a halter top with a mini skirt. The outcome? Rather than creating a fun, zany name, I created a name that sounded like it should come with a pole.

Not ideal for children.

Once I realized my mistake, I changed the first name to the equivalent of a beige turtle neck sweater and kept the colorful print skirt.

The new outcome? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Pure fun.

Tip: This new name is Coming Soon to an editor near you.
